If you're the person about to place the order for fall protection gear — harnesses, lanyards, hard hats, fencing — on a live jobsite, this list is for you. Six checks. Each one takes about 10 minutes. It won't make you a safety engineer. It'll just stop you from repeating the mistakes we made.
I've been handling fall protection and general safety orders for 6 years. I've personally made (and documented) 8 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $14,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist so nobody else has to learn these the way I did.
Step 1: Match the gear to the correct ANSI/OSHA reference
This is the step most people skip, and it decides everything that follows.
Fall protection isn't one thing. It's several: fall arrest systems, positioning systems, restraint systems, rescue systems. Each has a different standard (OSHA 1926 Subpart M covers construction; ANSI/ASSP Z359.1 covers hardware and system requirements). If you order "a lanyard" next to a platform rail, you'll get the wrong lanyard.
The first time I mangled this was in 2017. I ordered standard energy-absorbing lanyards for a crew working near a concrete parapet edge. The lanyards arrived, the label said "fall protection," I signed for them. During a review less than a year later, we learned that sharp-edge exposure without edge protection isn't something those lanyards handle at all. Full set had to be replaced.
If you've got work at an edge — steel, concrete parapets, exposed roof edges — you specify miller edge fall protection or an equivalent edge-rated lanyard. These are built to survive edge fold-over. Standard lanyards aren't. I don't care what the box says. Go to the miller fall protection website (or any manufacturer's site) and open the spec sheet. Find the edge test language on the label, then match it to your exposure.
(Note to self: pull the edge-rated spec sheet before every order now. I keep forgetting which batch numbers are rated for sharp edges vs. smooth.)
Step 2: Get the hard hat class right — Class E is not optional
Class E hard hats provide 20,000-volt electrical protection. Class G = 2,200V. Class C = conductive, zero electrical protection (impact only).
Our 2019 error: ordered Class C hard hats for an electrical contractor package. Saved about $180. They came back the day the crews started pulling conduit. The correct Class E stock was $12 more per unit, and the order we returned on freight cost us $340. Net loss: roughly $520. Plus the credibility hit in front of that crew.
If you're working around energized systems or overhead lines, the spec is Class E. Confirm the class letter is printed on the inside of the shell per ANSI Z89.1, and check it on every unit at receiving. Not a sample. Every unit.
Step 3: Treat construction site fencing as a safety system — not an afterthought
What is the purpose of a construction site fence? Three things: prevent unauthorized entry, separate pedestrians from operations, and keep the public clear of falling-object exposure. It's not decorative. OSHA 1926.202 covers signs, signals, and barricades.
Most buyers remember fencing late in the procurement cycle. Then they're stuck on lead time. When you search fence installation near me, you'll get a pile of results — half of which don't actually do commercial site fencing. They do backyard fences and they'll subcontract yours out, which doubles your lead time.
Realistic lead times: standard chain-link runs 2–3 weeks if you don't change spec mid-order. Barricades, panels, and gates run 3–6 weeks depending on stock. If you're inside that window near a moving date, you're paying rush fees.
The risk weighing that one time: we chose a local fence contractor at 22% over the national quote because he promised 10-day completion. I kept asking myself: is the 22% worth it, or are we eating a delay? Calculated it out — a delay day costs roughly $2,800 in idle site costs. 10 days vs. 4 weeks meant avoiding about 10 days of rental and labor. The 22% upcharge was $330. The math said buy it. Felt bad anyway, because the numbers looked wrong until I ran them.
Step 4: Ask for all-in pricing — ask "what's NOT included"
This is my own paranoia, and it's earned. Transparent pricing beats a discounted price with hidden fees.
When you're sourcing gear, ask: is freight included? What about unloading on large orders? What about custom webbing on the lanyards, ID tags on the harnesses, printed lettering on the helmets? Rush delivery?
I've learned to ask "what's NOT included" before "what's the price." Put another way: the quoted number is a starting point, not the answer.
Everything I'd read about comparing suppliers said the cheapest quote optimizes cost. In practice, our cheapest supplier ended up the most expensive once custom tags, freight overages on the helmets, and pallet handling fees pulled them to second place. The vendor who lists all fees upfront — even if the total looks higher — usually costs less in the end.
In 2022 we compared 4 suppliers on identical fall protection specs. Pricing varied by 38%. The low quote missed three line items. The second-lowest, with everything visible, was the real winner by the time we signed off.
Step 5: Inspect at receiving — then inspect again
Don't sign and shelve. Open and check:
- Webbing: no cuts, no burns, no fraying
- Stitching: intact, no broken markers
- Hardware: no corrosion, no deformation, snaps function
- Labels: still attached, still legible, referencing compliance standard (ANSI/ASSP Z359.11 for full body harnesses)
- Manufacture date: there's a maximum service life; older stock means you're already near the end of it on arrival
Back in 2022, a 60-piece harness batch arrived without manufacture date labels. We didn't catch it at receiving. Three months later, an inspection found it. Return, re-ship, re-order. $890 in redo plus a week of delay. That check is hardwired into us now.
Step 6: Document — OSHA expects it, and so does your insurance broker
Keep: order confirmations, manufacturer spec sheets, receiving inspection notes, and ongoing inspection records. OSHA places the compliance burden for inspection records on the employer. I've seen teams cited for poor records — not for failing to inspect.
Should mention: we've caught 47 potential errors using this checklist in the past 18 months. Not all of them were serious. A few were serious enough that they'd have shown up in a fatality review.
Common traps — short list
- Standard lanyards chosen for edge work — the single most expensive mistake we've made.
- Class C hard hats bought where electrical protection was needed — the price difference is small; the exposure is not.
- Fencing ordered at the end of the procurement cycle — rush fees eat the savings.
- Quotes read without asking what's not included — final cost is often 20–40% above expected.
- Receiving inspection skipped — trust the label and you'll pay for it later. Inspect and avoid regret.
A checklist won't make you an expert. It just stops you from tripping on things we already tripped on. Six steps, about an hour. That hour is usually worth more than the last few hundred dollars you argued off the quote.
